UCTM Standards Endorsement

The Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics would like to endorse the work of USBE and educators across our state in the Draft Mathematics Standards. These revisions are built upon traditional math knowledge with data science in mind as well as evidence-based ways that students across our state learn math concepts. Many experts including many of our past and present board members have dedicated countless hours in the efforts of opening doors of opportunity for all students.  UCTM encourages you to view the draft standards to learn more about these revisions.

UCTM Supports Teachers & Administrators to Implement Utah Core Standards

The Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics (UCTM) expresses its support for the goals and intent of the Draft Mathematics Standards released by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). These Standards represent an effort to revise the current standards and develop an updated vision of common core of state standards for proficiency mathematics for K–grade 12.

The standards define the knowledge and skills that students should gain as they progress from kindergarten to grade 12 to ensure that they will graduate from high school able to succeed in introductory-level credit-bearing academic college courses and in jobs in the workforce.

Many well respected mathematics experts from across the state have dedicated countless hours in the efforts of opening doors of opportunity of all students. These experts include many of our past and present board members. UCTM has been engaged in the process as a reviewer and has provided extensive comments and detailed suggestions to the developers and writers on every successive draft over the past year. The Council has diligently monitored the development of the CCSS and advised the NGA and CCSSO throughout the process, pointing out common ground between the common core standards and UCTM’s own K–12 mathematics standards publications. These standards constitute a substantial rethinking of mathematics and how it is taught across the state.

The Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a public voice of mathematics education, supporting teachers and students in Utah by promoting equitable, comprehensive, and collaborative teaching practices that ensure the learning of mathematics at all levels, advocating for mathematics teachers and learners, and providing high-quality professional learning opportunities and resources. With members and board representation across the state, UCTM is the state’s largest organization dedicated to improving mathematics education in prekindergarten through grade 12. UCTM is dedicated to ongoing dialogue and constructive discussion with all stakeholders about what is best for our state’s students.

History of Math Standards Revision

Background

In September 2023, the Utah State Board of Education triggered the start of the Math Standards Revision Process. Over the past year and a half, the USBE Math Team has worked through the Board Approved Standards Revision Process and worked with the Mathematics Standards Writing Committee to update and revise the P-12 Utah Core Mathematics Standards.

In March and April 2025, USBE Board Members reviewed the work of the writing committee and made recommendations that were shared back to the writing committee for their consideration (Step 7). The writing committee reviewed and responded to all Board Member recommendations during the month of April and captured their responses, justification, and revisions in this Google Sheet.

In June 2025, we moved to Step 8 of the process when the USBE Math Team requested permission from the State Board to release the Draft P-12 Utah Core Mathematics Standards for a 90 Day Public Review.

June 5, 2025 Utah State Board of Education Meeting

At the June 5, 2025 Utah State Board of Education Meeting, the state board members voted to release the Draft Standards and an addendum of recommendations made by several board members to go out for public review, Step 9 in the Standards Revision Process.
